Doctor's Appointment

We went to the doctor today. All three babies looked good and had strong heartbeats. The doctor was very positive and said medically I couldn't be a better canidate for triplets. I'm healthy, tall, and my first pregnancy was very smooth. Derek and I were very relieved to hear those words. At each visit the doctor measures the fundal, or the size of the uterus. At 9 weeks, my uterus measured 10 weeks (based on a single pregnancy). At 11 weeks, just two weeks later, my uterus was now measuring 17 weeks!

Reality Sets In

Derek and I have had a blast telling our family, friends, coworkers, and complete strangers that we are pregnant with triplets. I love the reaction we get! The complete look of shock as they cover their mouths, not sure what to say except...."Are you serious?" or "Wow!" Telling people brought us joy when on the inside we were consumed with fear and questions of the unknown. Will four car seats fit in our Pilot? Do we need to get a minivan? Where are we going to put three cribs? How do you feed three babies at the same time? How are we going to take care of 4 children 2 years old and under? How is Ben going to be affected? How is Maynard going to do with three more babies in the house? How big is my belly going to get? Will we ever sleep? What if I get put on bed rest? The questions went on and on....

Triple Suprise!

A week before Christmas, Derek and I were given the best Christmas present. I had a positive pregnancy test. We were so excited to be having a second child. We had everything all planned out. We couldn't keep the exciting news to ourselves so we shared it with our families at Christmas by giving our parents and grandparents a wrapped picture of Ben holding a sign that said "I'm going to be a Big Brother!" We had a blast watching everyone's reactions as they discovered the news.

Shortly after Christmas, I became very tired and nauseous most of the time. The symptoms were much stronger than I had experienced in my first pregnancy. I told Derek that I thought I was either carrying twins or a girl because I was so sick. Little did I know...

On January 17, Derek and I went to our first appointment. We learned that our full term due date is August 21, 2012. We were anxious to see our baby on the ultrasound and to know everything was well. As the tech started the ultrasound, she quickly asked if I had taken fertility medication. A little confused I answered, "No, why?" Derek was watching the screen intently and answered, "It's twins!" The tech then responded, "No, there are three and I'm not done lookin'." We looked at each other in shock. At this point, Derek and I could not believe our eyes as we watched our 3 babies on the screen. Derek's eyes filled with dollar signs as he instantly began calculating the costs. A roller coaster of emotions came over both of us... shock, excitement, joy, and fear. Words cannot describe the feeling of being blessed with triplets.
